Kenny Scharf on the cover of Juxtapoz

Our May cover artist, Kenny Scharf, was apparently arrested for what over the last 30 years he has become well-known for, spray painting. Apparently the artist was arrested in Bushwick, Brooklyn while painting one of his signature snakes and apparently as Art Sucks reports, while in custody cops were googling him and requesting autographs.Cops who arrested me were fans and wanted to talk about exit through the gift shop and even liked the tag. At the first holding cell in Williamsburg (there were only 5 people in the cell) the police were googling me and asking about things like the tunnel nightclub.” He continued on in saying “I was in there 30 years ago and im sorry to say its much worse now. Kind of like hell.”

“The Future is now,” Bob Sain said, dispensing the obvious immediately. More than a platitude, the phrase was alive in the literal sense as the director of the Centre for the Living Arts (CLA) unveiled their latest exhibit: the Futures Project.

New art museum director thrilled by bold, poetic "Futures Project"

Last week, I attended a sneak preview of the Futures Project at Mobile’s Space 301 (Centre for the Living Arts). As a newcomer to the Mobile area and longtime arts professional, I am thrilled to find such high quality contemporary arts presentations in my newly adopted city. Director Bob Sain and his team are bringing major art talent and cutting edge contemporary art to this community — and that fact alone will attract significant cultural tourism, helping to establish Mobile as an arts destination.

A Letter from New York

I’m in New York City on a bright spring day in late April, shortly before the opening of Futures Project at Centre for the Living Arts in Mobile. On Varick Street, in lower Manhattan, I enter an old industrial building converted into sleek spaces for photographers and designers, and take the elevator up to a graphic design company, 2×4.

A pop art icon paints a downtown Mobile mural

The pioneering pop artist with pieces in the world’s best museums and galleries, and graffiti art in countless urban settings, was asked by longtime friend and Centre for the Living Arts Executive Director Robert L. Sain to contribute to CLA’s new “Futures Project.”

Scharf’s mural is part of the exhibit, which opens this week and runs through December. It’s a must-see at LoDa Artwalk on Friday, May 10.

The mural will remain after the exhibit ends.

The chain of mischievous, amorphous characters Scharf is spraying on the Jackson and Conti St. sides of Space 301 ensures that the building will never again go unnoticed by passersby.

Kevin Lee: Like a hushpuppy of illumination…

What people experienced in the walls of the old Press-Register building that night opened a lot of eyes. The project as a whole was an obvious step forward, a bound away from our previously provincial path. There were some grumblings about the show, that it wasn’t Mobile-oriented enough, that it was too costly.

However what I took from the experience was that CLA had decided to utilize the space not to just shine a light on locals but as a beacon to call others to Mobile. I mean, let’s face it, in order to turn Space 301 into a destination for out-of-towners, it would have to feature names that had more renown.
