As a newcomer to the Mobile area and longtime arts professional, I am thrilled to find such high quality contemporary arts presentations in my newly adopted city. Director Bob Sain and his team are bringing major art talent and cutting edge contemporary art to this community — and that fact alone will attract significant cultural tourism, helping to establish Mobile as an arts destination.

Scharf’s mural is part of the exhibit, which opens this week and runs through December. It’s a must-see at LoDa Artwalk on Friday, May 10.

The mural will remain after the exhibit ends.

The chain of mischievous, amorphous characters Scharf is spraying on the Jackson and Conti St. sides of Space 301 ensures that the building will never again go unnoticed by passersby.

The project as a whole was an obvious step forward, a bound away from our previously provincial path. There were some grumblings about the show, that it wasn’t Mobile-oriented enough, that it was too costly.

However what I took from the experience was that CLA had decided to utilize the space not to just shine a light on locals but as a beacon to call others to Mobile. I mean, let’s face it, in order to turn Space 301 into a destination for out-of-towners, it would have to feature names that had more renown.

The Educational Foundation of America, (EFA), which is based in Fairfield, Connecticut, awarded the Centre for the Living Arts a $150,000 grant to be used towards the development of a CLA-owned vacant lot on lower Dauphin Street into a vibrant art park.

Arts@efa pairs “artistic excellence with site-specific locations as a means to drive community revitalization”. The CLA was one of two projects to receive funding from the EFA, which recently launched a new website. Showcasing the work of current projects across the country, the EFA site allows viewers an in-depth look at the work of current grantees.

Please visit the EFA site to view our progress.
