2013 Summer Camps

Let your child learn about the world of contemporary art through the CLA Summer Camp program! Our summer camps explore ideas that matter using exhibition-based curriculum. Taught by passionate instructors, the CLA summer camps offer hands-on interaction with real artwork and endless learning opportunities.

Children will enjoy multiple medium studio art classes and guided tours of the Futures Project exhibition. They will learn the basic elements of art while discovering new techniques that allow them to express their creativity.

Prices include registration for one week and all class supplies. All fees must be paid in full with registration. If you are a member, you will receive a 20% discount. If you sign up multiple children, sign up for multiple camps, or sign up for multiple weeks, you will receive a 15% discount. If you are eligible for a 15% discount and you are also a member, you will receive a 25% discount.

Before and after camp care is available for children ages 8 or older, and a snack and drink are provided for after-camp students. Campers may be dropped off no earlier than 7:45 am. Please do not leave children unattended outside the building. Children should be picked up no later than 5:30 pm. Before camp care is $25 per child for the week and after camp care is $25 per child for the week.

We ask that you send a peanut-free lunch, and advise a staff member if your child has any serious allergies or health issues.

Class Descriptions


Storybook Art
Instructor: Carol Wiggins
Cost: $90/discounts available

During this class, a selection of imaginative and inspiring children’s books will be the starting point for mixed media art exploration. Each day will include several story times, followed by creative art projects. Students may create a marionette puppet based on The Very Hungry Caterpillar or an acrylic painting inspired by Where the Wild Things Are.

Painting
Instructors: Lucy Gafford & Carol Wiggins
Cost: $90/discounts available

Campers in this class will explore painting techniques and two dimensional design while creating colorful compositions. Watercolor, acrylic, and tempera paints will be used to explore various methods and styles.

Clay
Instructor: Lucy Gafford and Carol Wiggins
Cost: $90/discounts available

Campers will learn basic skills for hand-building, wheel throwing and glazing clay pieces. Objects such as pinch pots, treasure boxes and clay creatures will be built. Campers will create a cup, bowl or vase while working on the wheel. Projects will be glazed, fired and ready to take home the week after class ends.

DIY Projects
Instructor: Allison Schaub

During this teens-only one day workshop, attendees will create unique DIY projects that can be used as gifts or to decorate their own space. Materials will be accessible and versatile. Attendees will leave with completed projects and several ideas to bring home and explore.

Drawing & 2D Design
Instructor: Terri Baker

Learn about the fundamentals of drawing and two dimensional design with engaging
and creative projects. From crayons to magazine clippings, campers will explore
exciting ways to depict what they see and imagine.

Drawing
Instructor: April Hopkins
Cost: $90/discounts available

Campers will learn about the fundamentals of drawing while using different mediums
such as graphite, colored pencils and oil pastels. Imaginations will be explored
while using different techniques to enhance their two and three-point perspective drawings.
Group activities and drawing games will engage the campers while they enhance their drawing skills.

Stop-Motion Animation & Storyboards
Instructors: April Hopkins & Allison schaub
Cost: $90/discounts available

Campers will learn the basics of stop-motion animation and tell their
stories through art and technology. Campers will transform their ideas
into storyboards, construct their own set and animate three short films.
Friends and family will be invited to view the animator’s films on the last day of class.

Print Making
Instructor: Sydney Sawyer

During this teens-only one day workshop, attendees will learn about basic printmaking. Teens will explore the possibilities of block prints, screen prints and monoprints.

Paper & Fabric Marbling
Instructor: Allison Schaub
Cost: $40/discounts available

During this teens-only one day workshop, students will learn how to make intricate and beautiful marbled designs. Ordinary paper and fabric will be transformed into unique textures using a fun and simple technique.

Futures Art
Instructors: Terri Baker & April Hopkins

The CLA will explore the future in a nine month exhibition called Futures Project. This camp will include forward-thinking projects inspired by Futures Project artists. Campers will also have a chance to view works of art by these artists. Basic drawing and painting techniques will be taught while using a variety of materials such as chalk pastels, ink, paint and more.

Recycled Artwork
Instructor: April Hopkins

Campers will explore innovative and creative projects that use materials that are typically discarded to make two and three dimensional art. This camp will allow campers to turn trash into treasure while being environmentally responsible.

Photography & Social Media Art
Instructor: Allison Schaub
Cost: $40/discounts available

During this teens-only one day workshop, attendees will learn how to take engaging photos for social media sites. Walking tours of downtown will allow teens to create portraits and photographs to enhance their own social media experience. Artists that use iPhones, social media, and the internet will also be explored.

Mixed Media
Instructors: Carol Wiggins & Allison Schaub

Campers will be given a wide variety of art making experiences to push the limits of creativity. Materials such as glitter, crayon, glue and various paints will be used. Collage, clay and found objects will be transformed into colorful pieces of artwork.

Photo & Collage
Instructor: Allison Schaub

Campers will learn basic tips and tricks to aid in taking successful pictures using disposable cameras. Photographs will be altered by using exciting techniques to manipulate film. Collages will be assembled from various materials and personal photos will be used to create a truly unique photo collage.

Stop Motion Animation
Instructors: Trey Lane & Timothy Dixon

This teen’s only week-long camp will allow attendees to create short stop-motion animation films. The class will explore examples from this media genre and learn about technique and editing.

Papier-Mâché  & Cardboard
Instructor: April Hopkins
Cost: $90/discounts available

Campers will learn how to work with papier-mâché and cardboard by creating wearable artwork, colorful piñatas and more. Techniques for sculpting on a larger scale will be explored when building sky scrapers, constructing animals and various creatures of their imagination.

Altered Clothing
Instructor: Courtney Matthews

During this teens-only one day DIY workshop, attendees will learn to make fashionable ensembles from old clothing. Multiple workshop stations will help teens create innovative articles of clothing that will enhance their personal style. Dying, sewing, and embellishing techniques will be explored.
